Herbal Hair Growth: Tips and Buying Guide

If you’re going bald, chances are good that you’re not happy about the situation. The good news, however, is that you don’t have to stay that way forever. Nowadays, there are more products on the market than ever before to help you regrow your hair, but if you have decided that you want a more natural way to get your hair back, you’re in luck. Herbal remedies are extremely effective and inexpensive as well, so if you want your full, thick hair back, try a “recipe” that has an herb or two in it.

Why Do Herbs Work on Your Hair?

Many people suffering with hair loss don’t realize that if you don’t have a healthy scalp, you’ll never have thick, beautiful hair. This is why you should concentrate on improving the condition of your scalp before concentrating on getting your hair back. Herbs, essential oils, and other natural remedies work because they make your scalp a lot healthier and because they stimulate the hair follicles, allowing your hair to come back naturally. Herbs are also good for you and since so few people are allergic to them, almost anyone can use them to stimulate hair growth.

If you’re using essential oils of any type, make sure that they are diluted with a carrier oil, which can be anything from sweet almond oil to basic olive oil. In fact, lavender is the only essential oil that doesn’t need to be diluted, so it’s good to keep that in mind. This being said, below are some herbal remedies that can be massaged into the scalp — the “massage” part is crucial — so that those follicles are stimulated enough to give you back your hair.

  • Fenugreek. Filled with proteins and linoleic acid, you can mix one tablespoon of fenugreek with water to make a paste. Next, add a little coconut milk and rub the concoction into your scalp. Wait 30 minutes, then wash and rinse thoroughly.
  • Ginseng. This herb is one of the main ingredients in many hair tonics, and it makes sense. It not only helps to regrow your hair, but will give you healthier hair as well.
  • Horsetail. Not many people know about this herb, but it contains silica, which improves the strength of your hair and makes it split and break a lot less often.
  • Indian gooseberry. Also called amla, you can mix two teaspoons of amla powder with equal amounts of lime juice, rub it into the scalp, and leave it there until it dries. Afterwards, rinse it off of your scalp thoroughly.
  • Lavender. Because of its antibacterial properties, lavender is great for keeping the scalp “clean” and unclogged by old shampoo and other things that might be there.
  • Miscellaneous essential oils. Certain essential oils have been proven to give people back the hair of their youth. Once diluted, rub it into your scalp every night before you go to bed. Try oils such as rosemary, sandalwood, and thyme for the best results.
  • Nettle. You can use nettle by grinding it into a paste and putting it directly on your scalp or by simply taking it in pill form. Either way, it works!
  • Onion juice. While technically not an herb, onion juice works wonders for hair growth. While it doesn’t smell terrific, rubbing it into your scalp twice a day has been shown to give people back a lot of their hair.
  • Peppermint. This type of oil is often found in hair care products, but you can use the oil by itself too.
  • Rosemary. This oil boosts blood circulation in your scalp, which goes a long way in producing the hair that you’ve always dreamed of having.

What Else Works to Grow Hair?

The average person has roughly 100,000 hairs on their head, and most people lose 50 to 100 hairs every day. This is normal, as is the fact that roughly 10 to 15 percent of your hair follicles are “resting” on a daily basis. Most of the time, these follicles will rest for a few months and then start growing hair again, but if some of them don’t start growing hair once their rest period is over, and enough of them do this, it can result in baldness.

Just what causes the hair follicles to rest but never go back to growing hair? The reasons can range from chemotherapy to certain medications and even extreme emotional stress, certain autoimmune disease flare-ups, hormonal changes, and thyroid problems. A trip to the doctor helps most people figure out the real reason they’re losing hair, and once you do this, you can determine what to do about it.

Aloe vera is another product that can help regrow your hair. Simply scoop out the aloe vera from one of the leaves, then mix it with a little coconut oil. Massage the mixture into your scalp once or twice a week, but don’t rinse it out. Some people mix the aloe vera with a little water, then boil it and let it cool before applying it to their scalps. Either of these methods will work.

You can also use hibiscus leaves and flowers to gain back those luscious locks. Buy some fresh hibiscus and place a bunch of them in a pot filled with about half a cup of water. Boil the mixture until the water reduces by half, then strain it and let it cool. Once it’s cool, massage it into your scalp in a circular motion, then wear a towel or shower cap for 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes are up, wash your hair thoroughly. If you do this once a week, it is proven to grow more hair as well as thicker hair.

The good thing about using herbs for thinning or balding hair is that they will never actually harm you, so if you’re not getting the results you want with one herb, simply try another one and see if that one works. Eventually, you’ll find a solution for your hair-loss problems so that you can finally have the hair you’ve always wanted. And the best part is that all of these solutions are simple to apply, not at all time-consuming, and very inexpensive.
